*PenB* First Impressions:

Not one twist but two! Well, the first one was predictable from the description, but the second one came out of the blue. The fantastic Mesmera, or simply Miss Meera, as she was known now, might have been old but she could still use her powers, and she used them to help people in small ways. As she looked out of the window, she averted two accidents, and who knows how many things she had done over time, sitting in her room on her own, undisturbed. She was no longer patrolling the streets to take care of issues like that, but she still did her bit.

I didn’t expect to find that she wasn’t the only superhero in this story. The other one also tried his best to fly under the radar, and I wonder if she recognised it immediately or if it was the pendant that gave it away. Either way, she knew, and she got him to tell her about the pendant and the connection to the former superhero he admired.

*PenG* Suggestions:

The story was very well written and I didn’t notice any errors, but I do have one question regarding a couple of sentences early on:

Miss Meera sighed inwardly at the decline in standards since her time at the Academy. But Doctor Clarivos was not a man famed for subtlety.

I felt like I was missing something here, a bit of backstory perhaps, but I couldn’t work out what that related to, even after I finished reading the story.

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

The young carer was a great character, and he said my favourite line in this tale:

[I] bought it to remind me how much one person can affect the lives of others.

It was a wonderful validation for Miss Meera, who continues to do her job even from her care home, which she chose specifically so she could be among people who needed her help. She could have been in a much nicer place in the country, but that’s not the kind of person she was. I felt I got to know her quite well in this tale, and this was one of the lines that made it clear what she was doing, and why.
