*PenB* First Impressions:

I had hoped that this story would have a happy ending. He had clearly realised that this life wasn’t for him and I thought he might get up and walk out, hand his pass to the security guy and do something he would consider worthwhile with his life. But that’s not what happened. He was well and truly stuck, and the trap was of his own making. As much as he resented the corporate life, he valued the opportunities the money gave him. When exactly he was planning to meet that beautiful wife he wanted to spoil with all his money wasn’t clear, but the chance of it happening was enough to keep him on his seat in his brand new office.

The story was quite bleak from the start when he woke up and dreaded his day at work. Things didn’t go well when he burned his shirt while ironing it, but that wasn’t his main problem. He soon realised that he hated everything about his work, from the commute on the crowded train to his apparently burned-out supervisor. He spent a lot of time thinking that day, about where his life was going and where he would like it to go, but in the end, he stayed put, not making those changes that, deep down, he wanted to make.

*PenG* Suggestions:

The story was very polished and I only noticed one small error. The story was written in past tense but here, you suddenly switched to present tense:

As the breath exits his lungs, so too does the hope that he will one day change the world.
“As the breath exited his lungs, so too did the hope that he would one day change the world.”

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

I felt for the main character in this tale. That feeling of being trapped in the daily grind, experiencing it as intensely as he did in this tale, noticing every little thing he hated and knowing this would continue until the day he retired - that’s a serious problem. I wonder if there will be a time in his life when he decides to make a different choice and walks away from it all, and if by then, it will be too late and he will have wasted his best years on a life he never wanted. He might have got his beautiful wife and children by then, but he might not have spent much time with them. It was a very interesting and thought provoking tale, and I enjoyed the read!
