*PenB* First Impressions:

I had a look at the “Beyond The Water's Edge” contest and it looks like it was quite a challenge! Unfortunately, the contest is now closed, and this entry was written quite a few years ago, but I hope you don’t mind still receiving reviews. I’ll start by saying that I don’t read romance stories very often, but this was mostly a comedy (as the genre stated) and it had me chuckling a few times. I imagined the main character with the exotic name of Salome running around like a headless chicken, getting ready or yelling at her sister, or both, and you described it all so well that I didn’t have any problems picturing the scene. At first, I was wondering what the big deal was about her date’s hair colour, but then it became apparent why she hated it so much. The conversational tone of the narrator worked well to tell the readers a lot about her.

The sister, Delilah, was also very well drawn. She was desperate for her sister to be happy, and she had found the perfect solution to her problem, with one little issue. So she made sure that Salome didn’t find out about it until it was too late to back out. And it turned out that she knew best because the issue became quite unimportant later.

*PenG* Suggestions:

I didn’t notice any errors and I don’t have any suggestions, so I’m going to point out a line that I thought was particularly well done. I liked how you described what she had been doing while she was on her own after her previous partner left her, eating ice cream and “ holding down the couch in my flannel pajamas in case it decided to up and run away ”. It was right at the beginning when you introduced the character to the readers, and it worked well to show a bit about her character.

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

The story wasn’t what I had expected – I imagined the comedy to come from a particularly badly matched blind date, someone who wasn’t suited to the narrator at all, but instead, it was a quite original tale that hinted at happiness for the main character in the end, despite her reluctance to meet this man. It was a great story, and I enjoyed the read!

Come on in and join the fun!
