*PenB* First Impressions:

A day, or rather, every day, in the life of a retired man who lives on his own in a small room with nothing much going on other than his imagination. Interestingly, I noted a line in the second paragraph as I was reading, the one where he looked out across the railway line and to the smoke stacks beyond because it struck me as particularly well done to set the scene. It wasn’t just that, but the chimneys and the smoke also became the backdrop to the whole story, making an appearance in various tales that flashed across his mind, tales where he was the hero, not some forgotten old man.

The tales varied from artistic to self-destructive, but even the last one would have been positive to him because he was decisive and took action. In real life, he even put off a simple walk because it was more than he could cope with. In his imagination, he could see himself as that daring guy who walked the tightrope, or the war hero, or the famous painter or composer. I’m watching Glastonbury as I’m typing this, and the part where he listened to music and declared it to be Some rubbish without a tune made me laugh out loud. I suppose that means I’m old.

*PenG* Suggestions:

The story was well written and I only noticed a couple of small errors:

obscure it's orange brilliance
“its”

bring any politicians career to a humiliating end
“politician’s”

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

I liked the mood of this story. My favourite part was when he looked in the mirror and didn’t recognise his image. The last line, casually dropped in at that point, was brilliant: They never spoke. There were some great details in this tale - the way his soup wasn’t hot because he always took it off the hob too soon, or the state of his slippers, in real life, but also the vivid descriptions of his imagined adventures, which showed the contrast very well. Despite the fact that this story was rather bleak, I really enjoyed the read.
