An attempt to investigate also turns up odd, as by the time she's ready to head out, the scarecrow has vanished, leaving something behind. Makes one wonder what it means.

Don't know if it's simply a misspelling, or a change of tenses, but you have a mix of Past and Present tense words, like has when had might make more sense in the area where she finds, and cleans the ring.
