It is another great literary work by the author. The writer always tries to send a strong message through her writing effort.
Though the author mentions it as fiction, I disagree with that. If we analyse the characteristics of the writing, we can see a it is a fantastic short story which follows all the features of an ideal short story.
The prime characteristic of a short story is it should begin from the first word towards the end of the story. In that story, the writer did the same. Without wasting any time, the author enters into the main story without any further wasting time for the preface or prologue. We, all writers, should obey that condition strictly. We see that Shayne stepped out into the cold and shivered. Her sufferings due to her stepmother are the main subjects of the story. It will concentrate on establishing a feeling that may have any social value or not, it is completely irrelevant. In that case, it has an advise to us. That will be discussed later.
A short story must have a minimum number of characters. In this story, there are only two- Shayne and her stepmother. Both the characters play an important role. Though Shayne is the central character of this story, her stepmother's brutal attitude is the source of the story.
An ideal short story should maintain a smooth pace all through like this story. Due to the pace, this story gains enormous readability.
There is an important message in the story. If you have power, and you misuse the same, the people may obey your orders without protest but can not win their hearts. They possibly hate you due to your behaviour. As the stepmother can not win the heart of Shayne due to her torture. Despite those Shayne obeyed her due to the position nothing else. If time plays against that lady, will she get any helping hand? No, probably not. We take an important lesson from the author.
But I must appreciate the beginning. Please, maintain that form and thinking brain. One day, you will be a bright star of our community.
