Ahoy, Theresa!
This is a nice little flash fiction piece about 'ghosts' or 'spirits' or whatever you want to call them, and I can relate to this more than you think.
I like the idea that this mother can still smell her deceased husband's cologne, and her daughter thinks likewise, with both of them believing that he's still around watching over them. It might not be completely original, but I like how you put your own twist on it.
I lost my mother when I was 11, and about 5 months after she passed I was in my bedroom by myself watching some old show (I think it was the Donnie and Marie show, but don't tell anybody else that!). There was only one small TV in the room and it was on a shelf almost up against the ceiling so I could see it from the top bed of my bunk beds. The only lightbulb in the room was right beside me in the middle of the ceiling and it wasn't even on. Suddenly a bright light appeared between the top of the TV and the ceiling where there was no light. It slowly grew brighter, but I wasn't scared at all. I knew it was my mother and she came back to let me know she was alright! After about 10 seconds I whispered 'Mom?'. The light grew even larger, and then slowly winked out, leaving only the dim light of the TV in the room.
I swear this really happened!
So even though your story might be fiction, it doesn't surprise me in the least that this lady could smell her husband's cologne!
Kee ponw ritin gon, my friend! Thanks for sharing this, and have a wonderful New Year!
