I liked how this began. I was picturing the narrator as a spoiled teenage girl. The reason that she got community service was never explained, but I imagined some sort of minor issue with the law.
The ending was a twist, but it left me a little confused. Lia is the "queen of the senior class". Are these girls still in school? If so, that makes me wonder about Lia. Girls who live in homeless shelters don't usually become queens. Although it would be interesting if one did.
Or is the story that this takes place a few years after graduation and the point is that Lia has fallen since the narrator last saw her. That's a more familiar story.
Either way, I hope the narrator became a nicer person from the experience.
