Remember I am not a professional reviewer. These are just my personal impressions and thoughts. My goal is to be encouraging and give you something that will actually help your writing.

First Impressions:

Ha! You thought I'd continue to stay away from your work. Guess again. Proud of your progress as a writer. The writing here is superior.

My Favorite Elements:

The action from beginning to end with the accompanying description. It flows well and sets a great mood throughout.

Suggestions:

This is good enough that I have to nitpick. Just two points.

"Seventh sense"? I'm assuming that you are counting the main character's magic as the sixth sense. I falls oddly on my ear. Not sure if it really works because a sixth sense has been used as a cliche idiom so many times it's hard to twist it. Some people may really like it but I'm not sold.

"... their greedy flames latching (on) to the surface." I think it sounds better adding that particular word.

Overall:

I don't know if it means much coming from me, but you are an excellent writer. I hope you realize your dreams of publication before long. I think your writing is worth.
