Dear Kitty Can Write, my name is Vicky and this is your Showering Acts of Joy member to member review in honour of your birthday. I have chosen to comment on your flash fiction The Flip of a coin. I love flash fiction and honestly believe that it takes a lot of talent to create a story with only 300 words. You have succeeded You have focused most of your words on one scene which is the secret to good flash fiction. The scene in the boardroom is well planned and executed. You bring the story to its climax quickly. There is nothing complicated about the story, there is an action that results in a choice does the protagonist lie or tell the truth? In this case he tells the truth and while the reader at first believes that the main character is being punished for his integrity he is eventually rewarded. I would be curious to know if the offer is ultimately accepted and if so how would the protagonist change. Your story was well written, very easy to read. You wasted no words on unnecessary descriptions. Every work had a purpose and worked. I was impressed with how well you developed characters in so few words. I could clearly picture the ego-maniacal boss and the employee who has to flip the coin. I am sure that while his co-workers glowered at him they were very grateful that they did not have to flip the ill-fated coin. I also enjoy the way you make the co-workers seem like young children looking to pass the blame onto your protaganist. a lovely example being: “I’m all for giving to charity,” Doug, the IT guy, said, “but I’ve got a kid on the way, man. When my wife asks, I’m going to blame you.” I also love how you really twist the dagger in your poor protagonists back with the e-mail that gets sent out. I know I am supposed to tell you how you can improve, but in this case I am not able to find anything that I can pick one. This was a wonderful coffee break read that I enjoyed very much. It was a great story that flowed nicely and shows that you truly know how to write great flash fiction. Thank you for posting this story on WDC and giving me the opportunity to review it. I will definitely take a look at what you have in your portfolio. Have a wonderful birthday and please keep writing!!!!! ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only **
