Breaking out of his thoughts, Ryan heard an unwelcome voice.
He groaned and thought, “Just what I needed… Kevin bullying some of my students.”
He took a deep breath and walked toward the commotion, failing to notice how the colorful scales seemed to be spreading along his arm and hand. A few of the vibrant scales flaked off and swirled in eddies of air as he walked toward the boys.
Ryan recalled how when Kevin was a student in one of his former sixth-grade classes, he had forecast that Kevin was eventually going to prove too much to handle.
“What did you call me, twerp?” Kevin’s voice sounded outraged.
“Buttmunch,” Nathan repeated, bravely if recklessly.
By the time Ryan reached the scene, Kevin had grabbed the smaller boy by the front of his shirt and had hoisted Nathan almost off the ground as a wide-eyed Jeremy watched.
“Kevin!” Ryan said in a loud, firm voice. “Put him down…”
He had barely gotten the words out when he felt faint. A rainbow of colored scales drifted in air currents as he started sinking toward the ground, falling into a dark tunnel.
“Mister Dalton?!!”
One of the boys, or perhaps all of them, said his name in astonished tones as they watched the adult teacher’s clothes suddenly emptied. The clothes crumpled onto the ground.
Inside a dark place, the teacher tried to regain his bearings.
“Where did he go?” The voice sounded like Jeremy, but loud and booming.
The teacher saw a glimmer of light and headed in that direction. An instant later he emerged into the light and witnessed three giants, former students, looking down at him. Their colossal legs rose from various pairs of enormous sneakers.
Kevin snorted in laughter. He shoved Jeremy aside and released his grip on Nathan as he leaned down for a better look at a tiny purple bug with transparent wings and yellow stripes.
“He turned into a freakin’ bug!”
Ryan heard the bully’s booming voice, but the statement made no sense.
“I’m not a…”
Before he even completed the thought, he saw Kevin’s hand reaching for him.
