Chapter #8

No Doubt about Trout

by: Naomi Verhan Author IconMail Icon
Well, you've won many competitions and bets involving your swimming, and you'll be darned if you're going to die like this!

Despite the growing odds against you, you decide to powerfully swim towards land. Swimming with the stroke you know best, you pump your arms and legs with one thought: that of survival. Your swimming makes an amusingly small racket on the surface.

In the water, a moderately sized brook trout searches out its next meal. Already having made quick work of a few rainbow smelt just to have the rest swim away, it desired something different for its tastes. Swimming towards the surface, it sees the splashings of what appears to be a tiny little insect at the surface of the water. It quickens its pace to get it before any other fish can...

Still swimming powerfully, you notice a shadow coming up from under you, but its already too late. The sharp-toothed maw of a trout closes around you, and your whole world moves into darkness. It quickly takes you down to its bony throat, which is quite abrasive and painful. You receive a minor cut in your arm before sliding the rest of the way down. As you arrive, drops of blood spill from your arm as you try to stop thinking about the pain and more about where you were. That didn't take long to piece together, and panic sets in. You furiously pound at the walls, but this only causes the gastric juices to come out before they're ready, burning into your skin and throwing you to the ground with pain. This only increases the volume of the juices, and tears pour out of your eyes as you slowly lose conciousness. Eventually, there's nothing to think about any more...

THE END.
