As suddenly as the gale erupted, the horrendous gusts of wind ceased with the closing of the back door.
For airborne Bryan, this had an immediate consequence when he received affirmation of the lessons he learned long ago about gravity and its effects. He landed, hard, on a rug spread over the floor in front of the kitchen sink.
All things considered, the landing proved softer than if his impact had been with the tile floor.
Bryan barely had time to catalog an assortment of aches, however, when more urgent matters gripped his mind.
His titanic brother scraped a chair across the tiles, producing an ear-splitting grinding noise almost unbearable for tiny Bryan.
When the noise stopped and Bryan lifted his gaze, he saw Matt settle his impossibly huge body into the chair and reach onto the tabletop.
Bryan saw the envelope he had left for Tommy in Matt's hand. His brother scanned the envelope and then discarded it.
He now picked up the transport carton, which Bryan had meant to use for shipment to his nephew. The carton looked as big as a building in Matt's enormous hands.
"Matt!" Bryan shouted in vain. "I'm down here, on the floor!"
Suddenly, the chair scraped against the tiles again, and for a moment, Bryan imagined he had been heard.
Instead, he watched as Matt raised himself to his full height and started stomping across the kitchen. His sneakers sent shockwaves reverberating through the tiles of the floor beneath Bryan's feet.
Matt moved with incredible speed. A paralyzed Bryan watched him move past the rug and continue to stand in front of the monolithic refrigerator. The huge door swung open and the front half of Matt's enormous body disappeared from view.
"What am I going to do?" Bryan gasped as he tried to keep his gaze on his gigantic brother. Not only was he stranded, no bigger than a bug, on his kitchen floor, but the vial of antidote was packed inside the transport carton hopelessly beyond his reach on the tabletop.
His only hope rested with contacting Matt.
Matt, nearly a decade younger than his older brother, also stood a few inches taller. Now that even mere inches made a big difference, he overwhelmed the kitchen, which had seemed so vast before his arrival.
Bryan began running over the woven rug, but found his bare feet kept getting tangled in frayed fibers. He slowed his pace to a steady jog, which allowed him to reach the edge of the rug without continually tripping.
He stepped uneasily onto the vast tile surface of the kitchen floor at the same moment Matt emerged from his raid of the fridge with a can of soda.
With the giant no longer motionless, Bryan waited to see in what direction Matt proceeded.
