Bryan sat at his kitchen table, drinking a cup of coffee, and staring intensely at the carefully prepared box.
He felt a strange sense of elation knowing that in a few hours he would shrink himself down to only a fraction of an inch in size, enter the box and get shipped to his nephew in California.
His body tingled with anticipation as he looked forward to shrinking again. He had been wanting to get small again ever since he completed his previous test experiment.
Suddenly, the phone rang. Startled, Bryan spilled some coffee as he stood and went to answer the phone.
“Hello,” he said.
“Oh, good. You haven’t left.”
Bryan recognized the voice of his boss. “Oh, Dr. Thompson. What can I do for you?”
“I know you’re scheduled for your vacation, but I need you here at the lab for a couple of hours.”
“But I really did mean to leave this afternoon...”
“I know. But this is really urgent. We’ve got a small crisis on our hands. I promise you, a couple of hours and you can be on your way. You can even take a couple of extra days off, paid in full.”
Bryan couldn’t refuse that offer. “All right. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
After hanging up the phone, he stared at the box and the vial of shrinking formula.
He got an idea. “Yeah, just a slight change of plans,” Bryan said as he gathered up the box and the vial.
He made another stop at his phone. After a couple of rings, he heard Tommy’s sleepy voice.
“Hi, Tommy. This is Dr. Smith. Just a slight change in plans. I still need you to pick up that package and mail it for me, but come to my office at EDL Labs. You know where that’s at?”
“Yeah, sure do,” Tommy answered. “Be there at 3 p.m.?”
“Yes,” Bryan said. “Thanks very much, Tommy.”
Bryan replaced the phone. Now, after he put in some time working damage control at the lab, he could retreat to his office and shrink himself. Tommy would find the package and Bryan would be on his way to Zach’s dorm in California.
He felt proud of himself for keeping his planning so smoothly on track.
