Chapter #5

Fantastic Voyage

Bryan clenched his jaw and sighed. He had decided to be proactive. That meant making difficult decisions that would be for the better. He glanced around the room, making sure no giants were approaching and began to trek out into the open.

He moved as quickly as he could, terrified a giant would come stomping through with careless and fatal steps. He ran past various boulder sized crumbs and hairs like fallen trees. At normal size the debris was undetectable, but for him they were obstacles in his frenzied flight.

Brian flinched at the sound of monstrous voices that swirled together like thunder. These people, whom he had been one of mere minutes ago, were now terrifyingly huge. Their complete ignorance to his presence, coupled with their heedless and casual power made them deadly threats to the tiny man. He remembered the close encounter with Corby’s shoe. He needed to avoid the massive customers and get noticed by Tommy! Brian wasn’t sure how to do the second part but decided he could figure it out later.
Continuing to flee, Brian struggled against the growing tightness in his chest. He was not an athletic person, having spent most of his time exercising his mind rather than his body. He realized now that he should have considered some training before attempting to reduce himself down to such an insignificant size.

Brian wheezed as he began to unconsciously slowdown from exhaustion. He forced himself to press forward though. In an attempt to measure his progress, Brian counted the faded tiles still stretching between him and Tommy. Two white, one green, two white, one green and so on. He counted thirteen, each one stretching several football fields’ worth.

Brian was hit with the desire to look back, but was scared to see his pathetic progress. In an effort to keep himself distracted Bryan stared at Tommy and his equally huge friends. However the sun shining through the windows blinded him, forcing him to face the ground.

His breathing was becoming more labored and somehow staring at the ground felt slightly better. Scratches, chips, and scuffs were easily visible on the aged tile that stretched before him. This only held his attention for less than a minute. Finally overwhelmed by curiosity, Bryan looked back.

Five tiles. He had counted quickly to such a small number. Disappointment and exhaustion combined so that Bryan stopped and fell to his knees. Having been consumed by his thoughts for much of the run, Bryan had assumed it would be further than that!

He wheezed in the shadow of a towering table. He felt tears of hopelessness stream down his face. He was miles from home, and from the antidote and no one would ever suspect he was miniaturized on the floor of his favorite diner! Who would ever even imagine such a preposterous idea?

A harsh ring perks Bryan’s ears. He looks up, wiping tears from his eyes to see the front door has swung open. From the table he has stopped below he has a clear view of the door. Bryan recognizes the blond behemoth as he strides in. It’s none other than his towering neighbor Mike Duggan!

Taking advantage of the “seat yourself” policy Mike strolls across the room towards Brian’s cowering form. Brian whimpers pathetically, feeling particularly vulnerable in the open space below the table. Mike’s white high-tops stomp closer, affording Brian a view of the smudges of dirt and grime that mark the wall of the sole.

The shoes stop mere inches from Brian and he is unprepared for the deafening screeching as Mike effortlessly pulls a mountainous chair from the table. His shoes squeak as they shift allowing Mike to drop into the seat, causing the lofty piece of furniture to creak under his weight. The tiny man stares up the jean-clad legs which meet at a gray shirt that stretches further upward beyond where the tabletop obscures his face.

Bryan jumps as a pair of soiled black shoes approaches the table seconds after Mike had sat down. Each titanic sneaker crashes down blindly onto the various obstacles Brian had been dodging mere minutes ago.

There is a rumble of exchanged words as Corby and Mike talk. Brian, figuring Mike made a more convenient savior than Tommy, began to cautiously approach his massive sneaker.
Suddenly Mike’s face appears from the side of the table, his piercing blue eyes seemingly staring straight into Bryan’s.

“Mike! Help me! I’m right here!” Bryan yells, waving his arms.

“YEAH CORBY! I WOULD SAY YOU HAVE A BIT OF A PROBLEM!” he says seriously, eliciting a confused grunt from Brian. Mike’s right shoe lifts up without warning, flying closer to Brian.

“no… NO!” he screams in terror. The sole becomes easily visible, various dirt and grime packed deep into the tread. To his relief it passes him, and Brian watches as it slams down onto a couple of wriggling black ants. He snaps his head back up to his colossal neighbor.

Mike’s handsome features are twisted into a warm smile. “HAHA, DON’T WANT THESE LITTLE GUYS AROUND HERE! THAT’S FOR SURE!” he laughs, as his head disappears to face Corby again. The shoe remains in place. Brian can make out half of one of the ants struggling at the edge of Mike’s shoe, where it’s back half had been crushed.

Bryan sputtered in fear at the unprovoked and merciless attack Mike had made on the ants. All because they were so insignificant to him. Above he could hear him laughing with Corby, having already dismissed the lives beneath his massive foot.

“That could’ve been me!” Brian gasped in fear. Mike had always been so nice and helpful! But now at this size he was simply monstrous! Instinct told Brian to run, but logic reminded him that he still needed help.

“I’m no ant!” Brian roared to himself, “They’ll see that!” he added to reassure himself. Feeling more confident, Brian...

You have the following choices:

1. Approached Mike

2. Continued to trek towards Tommy
