Chapter #6

Marooned

    by: Small1 Author IconMail Icon
The tiny man was still trying to get back on his feet when the giant stomped swiftly toward his spot on the kitchen floor. The blur of the onrushing work boots added motivation to the shrunken scientist's efforts, but he simply wasn't quick enough to avoid the oncoming boots.

One of Diego's boots stomped down. For tiny Bryan, the sound of thunder was followed by a sickening, squishy sound. The boot lifted off the floor as the giant opened the door to the basement. Everything looked tilted and crazy as the shrunken man struggled to comprehend what had just happened.

Diego's enormous boot had dropped right on top of him, but he wasn't dead. Instead, he found himself lodged deep into the fresh mud trapped in the tread beneath the boot. The exterminator had stepped in the mud on the short walk from the curb to Mr. Smith's front door.

The tiny man wanted to be thankful for his evasion of a grisly fate, but it was hard to feel appreciative as Diego stomped down the flight of steps leading into the dusty, darkened basement. Piles of cardboard boxes were stored along one wall. A weight bench (a holdover from one of Mr. Smith's short-lived phases to get in better shape) stood in the center of the room. Tucked under the flight of stairs with its set of six steps was the skyscraper-like water heater. Bare concrete floors and cobwebs in corners and crannies completed the atmosphere of the forlorn basement where Mr. Smith rarely visited.

Diego, however, knew that many insect problems began in the basement. As he stomped around the concrete floors, a chunk of mud dropped from the tread of his boots. Diego poked the nozzle of his canister of insecticide into a few likely nooks and crannies, spraying the lethal liquid in liberal doses, never noticing as a tiny, pale form squirmed out of the chunk of mud and crawled over the bare floors.

"THAT SHOULD JUST ABOUT DO IT DOWN HERE," Diego said.

The bug-sized man realized the true horror of his situation. The giant human was about to leave the basement, which would leave the shrunken scientist marooned a world away from help.

The naked little man screamed as he ran the impossible distance toward the staircase. "Wait! Don't leave me here!"

Once again, the giant moved with a swiftness that left the bug-sized man at a complete loss. In no time, Diego ascended the stairs, never realizing what he had left behind on the basement floor.

2. Someone comes to the basement

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
