The seconds wiled away in slow motion as Bryan stood awestruck. Shadow darkened the ground and the sky was blotted out completely by the titanic footwear.
He couldn't believe how huge it was. The young gas station employee could not fathom his enormity and power, or appreciate the devastation he caused with casual actions.
"This can't be happening..." He thought. "Surely, I don't die like this..." His wide-eyed stare showed disbelief.
The sole spanned many football fields, gunk and pebbles wedged in the aggressive tread pattern. Bryan was able to discern all of it, clods of mud, boulder-like pebbles, and even a few flattened M&Ms. Gruesomely visible in the heavy tread were ants, flattened by the gargantuan guy without notice as he worked. In the middle of it all, Bryan noted the skate shoe logo, "FALLEN", now an off-white colour surrounded by the black rubber tread.
All this spanned only a few seconds, excruciatingly slowed down to the minuscule scientist. He had forgotten the cigarette butt, which had been already so huge to him, pluming noxious fumes nearby.
His mind raced, unable to accept what was happening, and frozen in utter terror.
----
Having done this many, many times, Derrick didn't even think when he dragged his sneaker back, and twisted. He turned and continued to the sliding door, oblivious to the world around him, especially that of an ant-sized man. A light crunch sounded as he approached the sliding door, his sneaker smashing more spilled M&Ms and tiny ants on the dirty asphalt.
The careless young man returned to work, resuming his tasks with the same casual attitude he always employed. Derrick's only concern was how bored he was, and his future plans that night with his buddies and girlfriend. Each thudding step dislodging bits of dirt, chocolate, and many unfortunate insects. The teeny red splotch pressed in further with every step.
Bryan would be reported as missing only a day later. The rushed article detailing his disappearance was only glanced over by Derrick in the morning. Proclaiming that the zany man had stolen experimental supplies from the laboratory he worked at, which may of played a part in his disappearance. It even mentioned that he may of altered himself in some way, and requested information from the public.
This was all unimportant to Derrick. Police retrieved Bryan's car from the station, and questioned Paul and his employees about the missing man. When asked, Derrick only shrugged in response. The fact that Bryan visited the station escaped his memory.
He idly flipped to the Sunday comics.
"Garfield..." He muttered in amusement, propping his sneakered feet on the table, exposing the filthy soles.
Bits of the mashed M&Ms remained, and with closer inspection, one might think they saw impossibly tiny bits of bone and clothing.
