Bryan resists his instinct to bolt. He reminds himself that Corby is currently his best chance at salvation. After taking a deep breath, he walks briskly towards the towering left shoe before he loses his nerve.
Pausing at the base of the shoe, Bryan smiles when he sees that there are plenty of possible handholds. As he begins to climb, a doubt forms in his mind. Sure Corby was the easiest and nearest giant, but did that make him the best choice? Tommy was somewhere in the restaurant, and the teenager was always eager to help.
But Bryan reminded himself that sometimes he and Corby would chat about science, since the young college student was going into a science field. Though Bryan didn’t know Corby as well, he was undoubtedly more knowledgeable than Tommy.
Above him the shoe’s slope begins to ease and Bryan is happy to see that he is making quick progress.

Corby returns to Mr. Smith’s table. He glances around quickly to make sure Mr. Smith is still missing. Not seeing the older man around Corby drops into the booth. Staring at the plate of food he tells himself Mr. Smith isn’t coming back. But still Corby feels nervous the short professor will return to find him eating his meal. Deep in thought he tilts his right foot.
A grumble from his stomach reminds him how hungry he is. And free was too good to turn down. Corby opens the sandwich and adds a squirt of ketchup. Satisfied, Corby grabs a couple fries and pops it into his mouth. As he chews he feels his left foot and reaches down to scratch it. He attempts to rub through his shoe to get to the itch. Finally his foot feels better and he leans back up.
He flits his fingers to shake the bits of salt from the first fries and closes the sandwich. After a final glance around the room he bites into the sandwich, a crunch of crisp lettuce surprisingly loud.
