The huge sneaker soared overhead, time seeming to almost stand still as it descended.
Bryan's eyes widened as he took in the horrifying view of the gargantuan sole. The aggressive tread was filthy. Mud filled the majority of the thick tread, with bits of grass and food visible throughout, and numerous unlucky insect guts. Bryan even noted a torn price tag wedged near the heel.
Suddenly snapping from his stupor, the little man cried out and dashed to his right. "I'm not going to die! Not like this!" His shaking voiced croaked.
Lunging through the air, he aimed for the nearby safety of the looming cement wall. He landed roughly in a vile pond of noxious water that had collected at the base, barely noticeable to somebody like Derrick. Before he could even get his bearings a thunderous crash sounded behind him, sending a heavy vibration through the ground. Bryan turned around, his body covered in the slimy liquid, to see Derrick's massive skate shoe take up his entire view.
The sole was dirty, covered in grime accumulated by stomping around the gas station day after day, and towered over two stories to the bug-sized scientist. Bryan tensed in fear as the gigantic sneaker began dragging back, causing the ground to tremble and the sound of grinding gravel to fill the air. He was so awe-struck by what proved a simple action to the young titan, but to Bryan struck him as the beginning of the apocalypse.
-----------------
Annoyed that his seemingly short break was over, Derrick casually tossed the spent cigarette to the ground.
It landed near his left sneaker, smoldering brightly. Barely glancing down, Derrick stomped his skate shoe down and dragged it back roughly. Pulling his phone out again he read a new text message from his buddy, not even remotely aware of the tiny white speck nearly squashed by his huge sneaker.
He quickly tapped a reply to the text as he turned to go back to store. His large shoe obliviously stomped down on a few ants, missing only a few of them, as he walked to the sliding door and hoped Paul wouldn't give him flack for his extended break.
-------------------
With shocking speed the huge sneaker suddenly lifted causing Bryan to cry out in fear, his immediate assumption that he was next.
"Please! No!" He screamed internally, covering his head.
A distant explosive thud caused him to look up again. His entire body was trembling as he watched the mountainous Derrick stomp heavily away towards the sliding doors of the building. Bryan cringed with each step the titanic guy took, weakening tremors reaching his body before disappearing altogether as Derrick lumbered out of sight. Before him, the obliterated remains of the cigarette covered many acres-worth of the ground before him.
The shrunken scientist couldn't believe at this point that he could ever have interacted with such a gargantuan being normally. He was almost stomped out of existence when the giant simply put out his cigarette! Bryan felt horribly helpless and afraid. How could he ever hope to get somebodies attention?
His self-pitying thoughts were interrupted when he noticed movement ahead. His spine chilled as he took in the sight of a group of terrify ants approaching, he had forgotten the car-sized insects that also threatened his meager existence. His immediate thought was to escape.
Once again, he chose his right which proved to be a cavernous crevice in the mountainous cement block that made of the wall of the structure. Bryan couldn't afford to consider what may possibly be inside the darkness as he stumbled blindly into it. His tiny hands groping fruitlessly in the darkness, searching for any handhold. His heart sank and his pace became desperate when he thought he heard the monstrous ants pursuing him.
Just before his little heart gave out in terror, a brightness ahead of him gave the little man hope. Bryan dashed towards it, stumbling on the rough ground beneath him, he didn't care where it led, long as it was out of this hellish darkness.
His wriggling form burst forth into the light melodramatically. With hurried, grateful gasps, Bryan took in his new surroundings.
Stretching miles around him was the dirty tile floor of the gas station interior. Each tile was many hundreds of feet in length and width, giving the landscape an alien-like appearance. The nearby wall was made up of mammoth drink fridges that towered many miles high and emitted a loud rumbling electrical hum. A new feeling of awe washed over him as he remembered browsing this very part of the store for coffee over a half hour ago before this all began.
Suddenly...
