Captain Lukas Hawking leaned back as far as his chair would tilt without falling over. He glared at the ceiling as if it was to blame for his position. One damn mistake and they send you out to BFE. 'So frickin' sorry that I tried to save another man's life.' He thought bitterly. He leaned forward over his desk and sighed resignedly.
"Oh well," he said to the empty room. "Better here than on Earth. All Hell's about to break loose in that neck of the woods." His thoughts were interrupted by a static-y sound from the comlink on the wall. Hawking went to it and said, "What do you want Carmichael?"
"Sir, we're getting a strange reading, and Lt. Collins thinks you should check it out."
"Hang on, I'll be right there." He walked out of his office languidly. Probably nothing. What the Hell would be out here? Other than unofficially banished cruiser pilots, that is.
"Alright, Collins, what is it?" He asked the skinny techy when he reached the control room.
"That's why I wanted you down here, Sir. I have no idea."
"Well, let's take a look and a listen." Hawking put on the sonar headphones as he messed with the radar control panel. "What the..." He muttered after a few seconds.
"Well Sir, what do you think?"
Hawking hesitated before saying,"Probably nothing."
