Creeping quietly back to the cavernous opening into the sneaker that had been turned onto its side like a listing cruise ship, Matt ventured a quick peek outside.
He saw nothing. He listened, and heard nothing.
He didn't like the stillness, which added to the tension of knowing somewhere outside his own shoe, his best friend, blown up to epic proportions, might be wandering around his room. Instead of hiding from Andy, he should be doing everything he could to get help from his friend.
"You're a man, not a bug," Matt told himself as he made the decision to leave the shelter of his own shoe to look for Matt. Once outside the shoe with his tiny bare feet on the cold floorboards of his room, he heard a creaking noise and saw Andy sitting in his chair in front of his computer.
"What's he doing?" Matt wondered and sprinted across the open space, approaching the desk by the most direct route.
