"I would like to get to know the building and the others first." You tell her.
"OK, remember that tomorrow you need to go see Samantha on level 3 to get your assignments." Tanny says. She takes a key out of one of the drawers on the desk and hands it to you. "This is for your room on level 2, you are dismissed." Confused, you take it and put it in your pocket.
You get up and leave the office. You head back to the elevators and check the signs to see where you should be going.
Level 6: Administration.
Level 5: Demi-human research and testing.
Level 4: Flora and fauna research and testing.
Level 3: Human research and testing.
Level 2: Recreation and staff bedrooms.
Level 1: Lobby and storage.
Demi-humans? An entire floor dedicated for recreation and bedrooms? Those things strike you as odd, you've already got your own place to live, but apparently the key Tanny recently gave you unlocks one of those, accepting that it's just one of the perks of working here you call an elevator and wait for it to arrive, just then a woman approaches you.
"Are you new here?" She asks.
"Yes I am, I just checked out with Tanny and got my day off." You reply.
"Well great, my name's Clarissa, do you have any questions about this place?" She asks.
"Yes, I do, I assume that the flora and fauna means things like giant carnivorous plants and animals like snakes and such, but I have no idea what the sign means by demi-humans, do you know?" You say.
"Oh, them, don't worry, most new people here wonder about that too. They were only really discovered recently, you know those creatures of myth you know of, centaurs, lamias, and the such, they exist, and they're all quite predatory. Anyway, when we first brought them here for research they took offense that they were bundled with all the other unintelligent plants and animals, plus they grew so numerous so we dedicated an entire floor to them." Clarissa explains.
"So, monsters basically? I'll need to see them for myself." You say.
"I'd drop that "monsters" line if I were you, they're people just like us, some of them even work here as researchers, though it sometimes gets difficult for them to control their hunger." She tells you.
With that the elevator arrives and you both step inside. You are about to hit the button for level 2 and the doors slowly close and the elevator begins bringing you downward. Only after a couple seconds it stops, Clarissa checks the display and notices the number 5 on it.
"Well, you might just meet one soon." Clarissa says. The doors open up and you see a large woman wearing a lab coat, but when you look downward instead of a pair of legs, you find large snake tail, at least 10 feet long with a solid blue color. She slithers inside of the elevator, passing around you and Clarissa to get her tail fully inside, this makes you a little nervous as her tail almost completely surrounds you two. The doors close and the elevator begins descending to floor 2. The snake-woman moves right next to you and turns toward you.
"I don't think I've sssssseen you before, ssssssweetie." She says. You instinctual fear of snakes starting to kick in.
"Hey, cut that out." Clarissa says. "You're freaking her out, you're the first that she's seen."
"What ssssssseemssss to be the problem, Clarissssssssa."
"The snake talk, you always do that to the new people to freak them out." Clarissa tells her.
"...Spoilsport" The snake-woman says, this time in a normal voice. "My name's Listy, as you can see I'm a naga, or lamia, the pen pushers in level 6 haven't decided on an official name yet, I remember the days when I just called us, well, "us". Anyway, what's your name?" She says, extending her arm toward you.
You nervously shake her hand. "My n-name's Jamie, p-pleased to meet you I guess." You say.
"Now don't be so scared, you may have heard the stories but you'll find us to be quite friendly for the most part." Listy reassures you. "Except the ones in the containment chambers, they haven't quite adjusted to your kind, and if you go in unauthorized they'll just make you either a meal or a sex toy."
You calm down a bit, taking note to avoid wandering aimlessly in level 5 in the future. Just then the elevator reaches level 2 and the doors open. As you step outside Clarissa stops you and Listy.
"So Listy, how about we show Jamie here what we usually do when we're off work around here." Clarissa says.
"Hmm, what do you say Jamie, want to join us? I promise it will be quite fun." Listy says with a slight grin.
