Evolution's a funny thing. Because of how powerful they are, Pokemon should rule the world. However, humans adapted a defense against that - the ability to swallow things much larger than themselves whole and alive, and digest them without incident. This helped humans tame the wild, eventually working out the happy medium of the trainer system. But this isn't to say that Pokemon are helpless. Even with this adaption, without Pokeballs and other Pokemon catching tools, humans would still be at a disadvantage due to the powers of Pokemon. And humans know to avoid Legendary nests like the plague, as they are too powerful to fight even with a well-trained team.
Right now, even with this, it's still about even. Pokemon Trainers head out into the world with their teams, catching and sometimes eating Pokemon they find. And sometimes other trainers as well.
It is into this world that sixteen year old Ash Ketchum, newly licensed and with a belligerent but loyal Pikachu as his starter, headed out into.
