This choice: He asks you to take him up to the lodge • Go Back... I scaned the darkened forest in front of me. 'Where was I heading?' I wondered. The man in the car was waiting for my answer.
"I'm heading..." the man watches me, probably thinking I have no sweet clue where the hell I was actually going. Which was true. "Um... that way..." I point ahead of me to a little light far off down the road and in the woods. The man follows my gaze, his expression confused. "To the cabin down there."
"Alright," he said, leaning over to open the passanger seat. "Hop in."
The drive was very short. It was helpful of him to take me the rest of the way, though it wouldn't have been that far a walk. The heater of the car blasted and warmed up my shaking hands and frozen toes, and I almost didn't want to leave. But soon we had pulled down the long dirt path leading farther into the woods and to the lodge's doorstep.
Two cars were parked in the driveway and one on the lawn. Deep tire tracks were dug into the muddy ground in front of the house behind the vehicle, and by the looks of it, it didn't seem as if the drive had cared much about the survival of the owner's lawn. Plus the car was still running. I didn't know why, but I had a sudden feeling of dread -- a certainty that something was wrong.
The log cabin wasn't very small. but it wasn't large either. By the light spilling onto the leafy ground, I could tell someone was awake inside. I was a little nervous, because I've never been to this place before and was afraid I would be rejected if I asked to stay the night. I didn't know what these people were like, but I couldn't stay out in this storm and freeze. I needed shelter.
"Well, this is it," the man said. He looked a few years older than me, maybe 24, and had dark black hair and cold, hard eyes, as if something dark or troubling was on his mind. But then again his words seemed friendly enough throughout the ride.
"Thank's for driving me this far man," I said, reaching for the handel and pushing the door open. I swung my legs out and stood up, sheilding myself with my arm from the powerful gusts of wind.
"No problem. Glad I could be of some help." The man then glanced at the entrance to the house, and his eyes narrowed as a look of caution came over him. Wondering what was wrong, I followed his gaze and stared. The door to the cabin was wide open, swinging back and forth on its hinges by the wind. The sight of it sent chills down my spine. Something was definately wrong.
Eyes unwavering, the man got out of his car and came to my side as I inched forward towards the open door, cautious. We cast each other a glance, and I nodded. Something serious was up.
We were just reaching the door and about to peer in, our minds racing and senses on alert, when all of a sudden....
A loud, deafening scream came from inside. Our hearts jumped, then plummeted as we saw the beaten body of a woman crumbled to the floor. | Members who added to this interactive story also contributed to these: |
