"Hey! It's okay, I'm a friend of hers!" Trevor yelled through the storm at the man with the weapons, hoping being a friend of Nikki's would be a good thing at the moment. Sometimes it was. More often, it wasn't. But he didn't see any other choice.
"I know who you are. The kid she told to get lost."
Trevor frowned. She'd only told him to get lost because he'd confronted her about some loser guy he'd caught her with. Maybe this was him.
"She came up here to get away from you. Just get out of here and there won't be a problem." The voice in the darkness growled.
"The hell she did. She's escaping her own problems, not me. I came to make sure she was okay. But if you'd rather, be my guest." Trevor shrugged and started to turn.
"Wait." The shadow moved closer, a flash of lightening revealing his face for a moment. He looked a lot like Nikki. "Just how well do you know my sister?"
Sister? Nikki had family? Funny, as she'd never mentioned that little fact.
Another lightening bolt made him jump. The tree behind him cracked. Trevor turned, watching it go through the cabin window. Nikki. Terror set in. Would she have been smart enough to be away from the window?
Ignoring the other man's presence, Trevor ran up to the cabin, calling her name. The light from inside went out. Cautiously, he pushed his way through the mess of broken glass and tree limbs to find the door. But there were voices inside. A lot of voices. He was too late. They'd already found her.
An arm grasped his. The shadow. "Careful. I think I saw a gun flashing in there." The man's voice was low. "I'm Mike, Nikki's brother. What's going on?"
In a short summary, Trevor told him about what he'd heard; rumors of stolen cash from an ex-lover to help her get her singing career started. He'd also heard that the guy had been looking for her. Apparently, he'd found her.
