Unfortunately, this story doesn't have a happy ending for anyone, not even Shannon. Bob, Hailey and James all go to jail. Bob and Hailey at least go to a secret government installation where they continue doing their work, though never getting to see the light of day. James goes to a regular jail, and the combination of his short stature, combined with his crazy story does not go toward a happy coexistence with his fellow inmates.

As for Shannon, there doesn't appear to be any side effects, but as the first person to be successfully shrunk, she ends up going to another secret government installation, where she is studied relentlessly for the rest of her life.
