Calling the bluff

Victoria was a bit shocked at the offer, but then set her shoulders and said "Fine, Bob, you have a volunteer. I'll do it." After all, if her animals were being put to the test, so should she.
Bob was a bit flabbergasted. He expected his last comment to shut Victoria up, maybe even send her off in a silent huff. But if she wanted to play it this way, it was fine with him.
"Fine, then, we'll do it your way, Dr. Lansing. Brett, we won't need your services after all." Brett gave Dr. Lansing one of his patented surly looks and walked out. "Now, Dr. Lansing, if you'll step into the middle of that circle, we can begin."
Victoria marched out to the circle, but privately she was having second thoughts. Hailey came up to her and whisper,"Vic, you don't need to do this." That was just the resolve Victoria needed. "No, it's OK, Hailey, I want to do this."
Hailey stepped back from the circle. Victoria was soon covered in a warm light that...
