Return to the Princess

Isabelle was in the courtyard. She loved the courtyard - it was beautiful, especially in Autumn, and the earthy colors made her think of adventure and the world outside the 'magnificent' castle she was stuck in. However, right now it was the only blessing. She was to learn Latin for the next two hours!

Mother said it was a necessary component of being a Princess, but then mother said that about everything Isabelle hated. Isabelle was sure it was just to keep her from seeing Daniel again that night. She sighed, fiddling with her quill as she jotted down a few words next to their English equivalents.

After almost an hour, as she dozed in the setting sun, there was a trampling of hooves. Startled, she jumped up and ran to the trees that lined the courtyard. The courtyard was positioned almost parallel to the castle gates, and offered a view of those coming through it. A rider. A black rider, magnificent on the jet horses every messenger used.

Grinning, she abandoned her notes to the wind and raced out to where the guards were questioning him, almost tripping on her skirts.

"Hello, noble messenger!" She shouted in her best 'I am royalty' voice. The effect was dampened somewhat by her flushed face and stumbling.

Nevertheless, the guards saluted and the messenger looked relieved.

"This is the Princess?" He asked the guards. They nodded. "Would you be so kind as to deliver this into the castle, my Lady? This man is tired and rather hoping to avoid an hour of diplomatics." He chuckled and winked at her. She liked him instantly, and reached up for the letter he bore. The royal seal of Radigan was upon it. She couldn't help staring at that seal, knowing all it meant.

The messenger rode past, and Derrick - one of the guards - gently pushed her after him. "Best be off now, Miss. Your parents be waiting."

Isabelle smiled, a little strained, and headed for the castle. She waited until the guards turned away, before ducking into a shadowed piece of land. With trembling fingers, she opened the letter.
