Mr Trystell was an old man. He had married Noah and Brenda's mother as a second marriage when he was well into middle age. He had not wanted to be the owner of a work house. He recognised that his business killed the spirit of the poor and those who ran it. But his second wife had got him the position before she died and he supposed he should be grateful.

"What have we here?" Mr Trystell asked his son.

"I think her name is Doris. She has stolen a locket."

Dorothea handed over the piece of jewelry to Mr Trystell, who gasped and said

You have the following choices:

1. "Oh you good girl - I have a reward."

2. "Get out - and never darken this workhouse again."
