"Council? What kind of council?" Scout yawned. Words like council, or committee, just put him in mind of men in dark suits, muttering important stuff to his dad. He got bored right away. It was Pavlovian, or something.
"Just, The Council. I dunno. Shouldn't it be the Council of.. something? They're in England."
"Any more information?" Scout stayed by the window. Bella was hunched over Will's shoulder, and he'd never get a view of the little screen. He might as well get them to tell him whatever they found out.
"That's not your kind of thing. Folk lore" Scout worked out.
"What can I say. I'm progressive."
"Yes!" Will had found something. "An address. They have a place in Devon."
Devon, folk lore, hmm. Memories were starting to stir for Scout. "I know someone from this council, I think."
Will was amazed.
Scout flicked a glance guiltily at Bella. "Uh, you remember that story you told me about the school nurse?"
Will went scarlet; Bella looked unpleasantly interested. "Yes, what" Will snapped repressively.
"Well, I told you a story, uh, about a friend of my mom.." Desperately, Scout signalled with his eyebrows. He didn't want to go into this in front of Bella.
"She was in the Council?" Will was totally impressed.
"If it's the same one" Scout said cautiously.
Bella looked from one to the other of them. "What? What are you talking about?"
"This is man talk" Will said obnoxiously. "You wouldn't understand."
Bella got up without a word and stalked out.
Will felt guilty. He'd gone too far. Oh, in a couple of days she'd get over it. He got back to the main issue. "Are you still in contact with her?" he asked avidly.
