Before Bella could really get going - and to be honest, Grace had no plans to listen, so, hey - the phone rang. It was Will. He'd known the Banks family forever. "Is Grace OK?"
"Yeah" said Bella. It was not a tone of voice that sounded convincing, but Will wasn't interested anyhow. He moved on.
"Get over here" he said.
"Excuse me?" Bella didn't take to being ordered about. "You've been at that snob school too long already Willie-"
"No, Bella, seriously. This guy says you're the Slayer!"
Bella frowned. "This guy? You mean that Scout person? Look, Will, just answer with yes or no; I suppose he's in the room, but he's a few gallons short of a tank, you know what I mean?" Very slowly, like talking to a child, she added "Rich means stupid. You know that, I know that."
"How do I know that? I don't know any rich people. (Yet.)" As if someone across the room was signalling to him to get back on-topic, Will cleared his throat, and said hastily "uh, yeah, anyways."
Bella missed this bit. She had her hand over the receiver and was hissing at her sister "If I'm going up there, you're going with me. 'Cause I can't trust you out of my sight."
"This guy is Finn! He's amazing! He knows everything I want to learn about! You've got to meet him!"
"Calm down Will." All right. Bella would go back to Rawley, and she'd better take Grace too. Thank goodness her Dad was holding down the station this afternoon.
