"Hey, hey, hey" Scout jumped up before they started fighting.
Will was standing protectively over his laptop.
Scout tried to think of small talk. "So...uh..they play Abba a lot in the, er, you know, downstairs?" He did air quotes.
"Actually, they play a lot of Third Eye Blind." Jake was looking straight at Hamilton for some reason.
"Ja-ake" he whined. "You know I love that band."
"Take back what you said about Celine Dion."
Bella relaxed. She couldn't feel threatened by a Celine fan. She needed her self respect.
Will was now tapping frantically at his computer, muttering "What kind of a demon is this?"
Jake came and peered over his shoulder. She liked computers too. "You've only got badass demons in this listing. That's kind of racist." She glared at him. "You humans are so provincial."
Hamilton sighed. He had heard the whole human bigotry rant when he showed Jake that monster killing PC game. ("It's just fun" he kept telling her. "Fun? I socialize with zombies in New York, Hamilton." "You're weird, Jake.")
"There are other kinds of demons?" Bella asked skeptically.
"Sure." Jake supposed they wouldn't take her word as unbiassed. "What about your textbooks downstairs?" Maybe those would back her up.
"No." Hamilton put his foot down. "New member of faculty down in that room. Best not to get involved, or we'll get volunteered for stuff."
"You're the strategist." Jake was only half mocking. Will wondered if the summoning spell had forced her to like Ham, or if his looks were the attraction.
"Wait. Are there really zombies in New York?"
"Sure, Scout. Demons are everywhere."
"Not in this school." Will was sure of it. "They're exclusive."
Jake's eyes narrowed. "I bet there are. Do you want me to spot them for you?"
