Many thought that Cardac was human, a common mistake. Mankind were too blind to accept that the strongest army around was commanded by anyone other than one of them, their vanity making them weak to the legions of non-human spies and informants working for Cardac. Aeldwyn, the faelan, was one of these, but his purpose was much more sinister than simple information. His job was to infiltrate the very heart of the city and kill the figure head that ruled there, the King.
Faelans were notoriously rare and unlikely to escape the King's attention. The rider had been mislead to believe she was to give the horse as a gift to the ruler, one any man would find hard to turn down. Then Aeldwyn could return to his true form and destroy the King, demoralising the people of the city and making them lambs before the slaughter. Cardac's armies were mere hours away, ready to strike on the signal for Aeldwyn and, in the confusion that followed the King's death, victory would be easy.
