With reflexes that would make the quickest of cats envious the girl spun, her bright eyes flashed as she snatched an energy sword that hung from a belt around her shapely hips. She depressed a button on the equizitily engraved hilt and the blade blazed to life with an orangish yellow glow that illuminated the area some twenty paces around her.
In the glow of her blade she could see the attackers moving towards her. There were perhaps ten of them. They were covered in thick shaggy furs that hid their features but she did not need to see their features to know they were Gromums. Inhuman beasts, raiders that roamed the waste-lands and would kill anything or anyone they came upon, but for them to attack a city was unheard of, their numbers were too few to attempt something like this. Things were far worse here then they seemed.
The guards stood terror-stricken as the obvious leader of the Gromum's stepped forward to face the young girl that stood before him, sword at the ready. A guttural laugh escaped the towering beast's lips as he looked down upon her and then without warning he struck! A huge taloned hand shot out from beneath the folds of his furs aimed at the girl's throat but instead of feeling his razor sharp claws sinking into the soft flesh of her neck there was a burning pain and he jerked back: a severed stump were his hand once was. The beast screamed in pain and rage as green blood pumped from the wound with every beat of its heart. It threw its head back and howled in anger, the folds of its hood fell away to reveal its massive head. Yellow eyes glowed under high jutting brows that were hair covered and wrinkled skinned. Its mouth was filled with rows of needle sharp teeth and its serpents tounge whipped out lashing the air with its forked ends and sickly blue colour. It rushed the girl with all its tremendous strength but she stepped aside easily and the beast's momentum carried it past her.
It turned and attacked again this time bearing a spiked club in its remaining hand. The earth shook as the beast's intended blow missed the girl and struck the ground. Her moves perfectly timed and choreographed as if she danced some sort of ballet of death and it ended as the creature's disembodied head hit the ground with a melon sounding thud, its dead eyes staring into nothingness. The remaining creatures, seeing their leader fallen, fled in terror.
The girl turned to face the guards. She deactivated her sword and then said quietly, "I've come to see the king."
