The black mass

Even though the guards had made it clear that they did not intend to hand over the girl, the army of dark riders on the other side of the barrier seemed relentless.
With a warlike cry from the leader, the black mass that stretched to the horizon, swarmed up and started shooting bright pink energy balls at the barrier.
"Comet phasers," the guard commander muttered, "they must be mad! They will have to do much better than that to get through the barrier," he said with a slight smile.
Seemingly, the dark riders seemed to think so too, because all of a sudden, they stopped. The guards heard sullen muttering echoing throughout the mass. Slowly, they began to retreat.
"Haha!" the guard laughed, "we will be able to sleep safely tonight." He watched the black mass' retreating back.
"Don't become overconfident, sir," said another guard. "Look!" he added, pointing to the eastern side of the fort.
As the guard commander turned his head, he saw another black mass that seemed to be bigger than the last. The guard sucked in a breath, and he and his fellow guards started to slowly back away from the barrier, as the black mass grew steadily nearer.
The mass, however, stopped a good distance away, and remained still for several minutes.
"What the hell are they doing?!" asked the guard-in-chief. He didn't have to wait long for his answer.
Within minutes, the mass gave out an almighty roar and a massive flourescent green lightning bolt shot out from the centre of the mass and smashed into the barrier.
The barrier began to ripple like water. At this, the guard panicked.
"The barrier can't last for long against those Zurethan streaks! The barrier will be down in a matter of minutes!"
The guard commander realised this too. He was faced with a really perplexing situation.
