Chapter #2

Carolyn Tests it on Herself

by: Jenny Amara Author IconMail Icon
By way of introduction, my name is Kendra Coolidge, and I’ve been CJ’s best friend since… well, since forever. Our friendship goes all the way back to preschool when I met Carolyn on the playground. She was off playing alone, and I just couldn’t let her do that. Starting school was scary enough not to have someone to go through it with. We hit it off right away, and the rest is history.

This is why I’m writing down my account of CJ’s life. Things have gotten out of hand, and I’d much prefer the record be set straight on what transpired. There are bound to be countless rumors, false reports, and exaggerations after the truth is revealed. Dear readers, I implore you to believe me that this is the only factual account of my dear friend’s actions and the circumstances surrounding them. CJ is a good person at heart, and they have nothing but the best intentions in mind for everyone. Things just… got out of hand quicker than CJ could respond to them. I’m sure she would have corrected the errors if she had been afforded the time necessary to do so.

I'm getting ahead of myself, however. As with all historical records, we must rewind to the beginning…

Carolyn invited me over to discuss something exciting and promptly sat me down. She was talking far too quickly for me to understand everything she was saying, but the message I came away with was that she had “corrected” the flaw that had turned her great-grandfather into a monstrous man. I congratulated her immediately but quickly pivoted to ask what she needed me for. My nerves were on edge as I spoke. The words continued to flow, but my suspicions that I was about to become her lab rat climbed higher and higher. As I finished my question, I was prepared to launch immediately into a rejection to inform her that I wouldn’t be able to be her test subject. To my tremendous shock and relief, CJ told me the test subject had to be her.

Thankful for my evasion of CJ’s scientific eagerness, I was filled in on what my role would be instead. CJ, ironically, had always been shy around needles and needed me to administer the shot. This was easier to accept as a task than letting CJ down. So, with a needle in hand, I steadied myself to administer the dose. The plunger was more challenging to press down than I expected. I fumbled a bit in completing the full injection, which caused CJ to groan a bit. Her head remained turned away from me, so I couldn’t tell how badly I messed up.

I removed the needle, set the debris on a tray, and returned my attention to CJ. I asked her what would happen next, and she laughed at my question. I cringed as CJ explained that the formula’s original purpose was to isolate the “dark side” of man. CJ continued to explain how the formula actually had advanced cellular regeneration abilities and would surely help regulate brain functions to help prevent depression. I asked her what she fixed about the formula, given that what it did to her great-grandfather was far worse than what she described. What CJ said next went way over my head, but she assured me that, at worst, she might drop a few pounds around her love handles thanks to the formula’s predicted improvements to her metabolism.

Fate’s thread spun, and the future aligned:
