Chapter #3

Medea, the Daughter

    by: Keroro04 Author IconMail Icon
Medea Aeetes, according to the myths was a sorceress granddaughter of Helios and a truly vindictive woman. Worshipping Hecate, she fell in love with Jason of the Argonauts and thought that through her goddess's love he'd be able to care for and pamper her until they parted via death. She had even helped him grab the Golden Fleece in this mad pursuit of love and then followed up by killing her brother Absyrtus in order to distract the king long enough for the two to run away and elope!

And how does he repay her? By moving on out of boredom and marrying another woman of course!

Unfortunately for Jason, Medea was the most vindictive woman to have ever lived in Ancient Greece. She not only killed her former husband's new wife but also her own fourteen sons in a mad dash to get to Jason by any means necessary. The two fought a long and hard battle, but by the time Medea won she spared his life knowing that living was a far worse punishment for him. After all, without any children from either her or his new wife his life would never again have either a heir or a legacy. Outside of Odysseus, it was the greatest tragedy of Ancient Greece.

What history fails to mention is that Medea had a daughter, who shared both a name and resemblance to her. At only the age of 3, she was with her fellow siblings when Medea unleashed her desired revenge, but was spared due to the pleading of her great grandfather to the goddess Athena. To protect her, she was placed in a temporal stasis and flung halfway across the world so that she'd never be found, not by her mother and certainly not by the goddess Hecate, who inspired her mother to take revenge.

___

The stasis eventually vanished 16 years ago, when Medea was found in Miami, Florida by Adonis and Adora Gloriana. Rich and prosperous, Adora was the owner of Sparta Automotive, a top of the line car brand which catered to the entire world with the high-speed Chariot brand of sports car while also participating in the worldwide racing circuits with some of the most top of the line vehicles in the world.

If Medea was perhaps a normal person, her fate probably would have been that of a rich socialite, adopted into wealth as a bit of good publicity and ultimately being forgotten. To her misfortune however she was special, something which she found out in high school when she had to face a powerful hellhound that was trapped beneath her high school. In a desperate bid to try to save herself by waving her hands around, and through her divine blood mixing with her sorcerous legacy she had turned herself into a puddle of water that froze around the hellhound, sealing it until it could be taken away safely.

When her mom found out about this incident, her old life was basically over. She was separated from most of her old friends and forced to hang out with sidekicks as she was physically pushed to her limits. Gattaca was her tutor, and training under her was a worse hell than any Tartarus she could lay witness to, at least to her mind. Not to mention, while Hawk was still among her friend group and was a well needed old friend in these trying times, the rest of her new clientele saw her as just a liability. After all, her powers were bound by hard to understand magicks, not understood and explainable Metagenes.

However, there was one virtue at the edge of that tunnel that kept her going. Medea, unlike her birth mother was a virtuous being at heart, who actually wished to help as many people as possible from danger. Through heroics, even if her life was hateful at the moment she could at least eventually break free from this training and become a genuine hero. No more having to do hundreds of sit ups and arm pulls, instead she could rescue civilians from raging fires that could span a city block and face off against monstrous beasts that threatened the state of Florida.

Only... with her parents, her heroics didn't go out that way.

"Woah, thanks for saving my cat Argona!"

"It's Argonaut, actually. And I'm doing my part in making this place just a bit safer..."

Rather than putting her in the way of genuine threats, she was doing simple acts such as saving cats from trees or helping put out small housefires. She had been trained for about a year at this point, and even with getting trained by one of the most athletic Metahumans on the planet she felt like her talents were being wasted on these minor acts of heroism and goodwill.

Of course, most of it wasn't even in her hands. It was in her mom Adora's. She had gotten her dozens of sponsorships to fund her heroics, from food and comfort tycoons such as Yeng and Chocolatte to construction firms such as Brick By Brick and Lemonti Constructions. All these companies had strict eyes on her for each and every one of her actions. If she ever acted in the wrong way or god forbid failed to stop a crime, they were going to punish her financially and possibly even back out.

Thanks to this, she could only ever go against an active crime once per day, while the rest of the time she was doing mere lesser work. Even her wine-dark leotard wasn't immune to this, displaying a small logo for the Yeng Corporation resting on the back reminding her of what she was doing heroics for.

And then she heard it.

*BOOOOM!*

"Go, go, go!"

There was Pastry Maker, a common goon working under the recently released Moxie City Sirens blowing up some rival bakery owned by Miss Mint and threatening to escape. She counted 5 criminals besides the pink-haired woman in a chef's hat, and they easily looked like that the bakery they just targeted was not the last judging by the black eclairs that they carried. Pastry Maker did love hiding her C4 in her baked goods after all, not as a means of hiding them but as a sort of calling card.

At that moment, Medea got a text. It was her mother, who wanted her to show up to help cut the ribbon at some new fast food place for the Yeng Corporation. The black-haired girl for once ignored it, as she raised a hand at the running criminals.

"Sorry mom, but I can't look a blind eye at this."

With a wave of her hand, Medea transformed her arm into scorpions and flung them forward with mystical winds, causing them to land on two of the five criminals and sting them. Not expecting the insects they quickly flung them off... only for them to succumb the knockout drug that was held within their bodies. As they fell, the next two ran directly into them, stumbling to the floor and dropping their eclairs.

"What the!? Hey, what are you doing on- hey... aren't you that mascot for Sparta Automobiles? The Argonaut or something?" Turning her eyes to the olive-skinned woman who had done this to her henchmen, she reached into her sack and pulled out a unassuming muffin. "I thought you were just meant for publicity stuff, like rescuing cats and shit! I didn't think you actually fought crime for real! Either way, I got a simple means for stopping a simple girl... a muffin to blow you up from inside!"

Tossing the muffin forward, Medea grabbed the yellow fabric that hung from her back and swung it forward. This fabric was the Golden Fleece, an ancient artifact from Greece that her mom had bought to ensure her safety... among other things. As the golden fabric wrapped around the muffin, she channeled her magic through it and defused the muffin causing it to lose it's explosive properties. Once it was done, she simply let the muffin fall to the floor before stepping on it, crushing it beneath her heels.

"Publicity? I'm forced to do that stuff. If it were up to me though, I'd be stopping you way more often. Hell, I'm probably pissing off a sponsor just by fighting you now. But I'm not letting a criminal like you escape when you're basically right in front of me!"

"Shit... uh... fleeing!" Throwing a egg to the floor, smoke rose from beneath Pastry Maker's feet as she ran away as fast as her feet could take her. Medea didn't even need to move from place, instead reforming her arm and trapping the last goon in a full body grapple.

After all, she didn't need to chase her. Not when a scorpion was already on her leg.

"Bwahaha! You may have my minions, but I... live... to..."

*THWUMP!*

With Pastry Maker landing on her side and out of commission, Medea took her time in constraining the criminals with some simple hand cuffs locking their arms behind the back. As she did this, she felt the lens flash of a camera hit her eyes from the fair distance...

"...Damn it, that's probably ending up on the news."

With that out of the bag, Medea decided to just run with it and pull the criminals into her Sparta Chariot, before driving them to prison. It wasn't like she was going to be able to lie about capturing about them after all. At the very least, capturing a criminal and preventing further destruction did feel somewhat good... though even then there wasn't really any life at stake besides whoever was in that bakery they already blew up.

What really mattered though was her parents. Hopefully, they'd be fine with her making a little detour from her schedule to make her city a safer place.
