Matt drummed his fingers on the desk as he looked at the contract. The lean and dark haired man pursed his lips and let out a sigh. Sat across from him, in a business suit and skirt that seemed painted onto her heavy frame, Melody leaned forwards.
“So…these numbers…?” Matt let the question hang.
“Matthew, I can assure you the offer is genuine.” Melody answered, a hint of nervousness in her voice.
“Ok…” He let the vowel stretch. “So that is…surprising to say the least and all I have to do is…get fat?”
Matt looked at her quizzically.
“Well…no. But also, yes. It’s a bit more complicated than that, we don’t want you to go out of your way to get fat, but we need someone to…lighten the load as it were…for the rest of us.”
Matt looked down at the contract again. Melody felt the sweat beading on her forehead. How many had made it this far? A dozen? More? Too many. None had gone further, of their own accord.
“Well, why not I guess.” Matt said as he began to jot his name and initials down.
“Oh thank you! Uh, such a relief!” Melody beamed happily, her shoulders unclenching. “You don’t know just HOW much we appreciate this.”
“Ma’am, with the checks you’re about to send my way, I have a pretty good idea of how much you appreciate it.”
