You dive into the abyss, not knowing or caring what lies on the other side. As you enter it, you realize that was a bad decision, since, you know, bad things could lie on the other side. Oh well, it's too late to do anything about it now, you're falling, and then there's light, and you're flying, and flying, and tumbling, around and around in a circle. It's kind of fun, but also kind of terrifying. You try to reach out your arms to slow yourself, but find you don't seem to have arms. Or legs. Or anything else. Well...you have...something. You aren't just nothing. You're...floppy? Sort of? Does that make sense? It's like you don't have bones, you're just adrift on the wind.
There is a loud buzzing sound, and suddenly the world slows, the air calms, and then you fall to the ground, buried under a bunch of soft cloth. If you didn't know better, you'd think these were socks....
You lay there, unable to move, for a long time. It's a good long time before you hear a series of slow, pounding thuds, and then there's a click, and light pours in. You're scooped up unceremoniously and dumped into a container. Was that some sort of crane? You're not sure. Suddenly, the world is rising, and then it's swaying back and forth, and then the container tips over and you're dumped out onto...onto....
You can finally see, and if you could, you would scream in terror. The largest woman you've ever seen is standing over you, holding a laundry basket, which she sets on the floor. Her motions seem a bit slow, like you'd expect a giant to move, and she is giant -- about twenty meters tall or so.
She appears to be in her mid-to-late thirties, but pretty for her age. Her clothes look slightly out of date -- like something out of the nineties, maybe. But you don't pay that much attention; you're much more focused on those hands, which are bigger than you are. She reaches into the pile, and grabs a couple of...oh, of course.
A couple of socks.
She folds them together with practiced dexterity, and moves on to the next pair. And then another, and another. She grabs you and a match about halfway through -- you appear to be a white sport sock, but you can't see much more, as she folds you together and turns the other inside out, blocking most of your view of the outside world.
There you sit, until she gathers you up, and after a little bit, drops your bundle into what you assume must be a drawer. The world shakes as it's pushed back in, and you're left in darkness.
Several hours later -- you're not sure how many, but several -- the world shakes, and your little prison is batted to the side as someone picks out another pair of socks. And the world shakes again, and you're back in darkness.
The good news is that those periods in darkness...they last a very long time, but not as long as they would if you were a person. You do get a sense of days going by -- you hear sounds of the house, alarm clocks buzzing, people calling to other people, and of course, your great drawer opening and closing -- but you lose track of how many. For a while, you tried to figure out who your owner was, but while you can hear the sounds, you can't quite understand them. It's not that they're speaking a foreign language -- you'd at least know it was a foreign language. It's more like, as a sock, you can't understand what those vast creatures are saying.
Has it been a week? Has it been two? You're not sure. You despair that maybe it's summer, and nobody's wearing socks. Maybe it will be months. Maybe your owner will outgrow you. Will you be stuck like this forever? You go back and forth between boredom and panic. Maybe jumping through that black hole was a bad idea.
Finally, after what feels like forever, you and your twin are lifted up. Fingers deftly undo the prison you've been in, and you finally see who is going to wear you.
