Chapter #5

Just one of the kids

    by: WretchedWreck1 Author IconMail Icon
When she reached the birthday party, the mother set you down at one of the picnic tables where a number of other children sat. You were squished between two little girls, and with a sigh you realized you hadn't even been placed with the slightly older kids, but rather with the very young toddlers, likely only a year or two old. The only ones younger than them were a couple of babies being cradled or held by mothers. At the table next to yours were the older kids, including a boy in a birthday hat you assumed was Henry. You fumed as the girls around you jostled with elbows while they propped themselves up to see over to the other table better. You looked for a chance to escape while eyes were trained that way, but unfortunately, the same young mother who had kidnapped you had planted herself directly behind you, and as you looked up you could see her taking the occasional glance past her large bosom down on you.

Great. Not only were you once more mistaken for a child, but you somehow had the eye of the most attentive of the mothers present on you.

You decided there was no choice but to settle in and wait for her to get distracted as well. After a moment, a cake was suddenly revealed, carried by an older but very beautiful woman with a bright smile, and an extremely loud and very off key rendition of Happy Birthday began. You tried to ignore the grating sound in your ears as you looked around. Maybe there was someone or something that could help you.

There were three tables of people at this party, it seemed. First was the table of younger kids, guarded by the young mother and a couple of her peers who had babies. Then was the table of (slightly) older kids, including Henry, which was watched over by the older lady you assumed was Henry's mother and two other older women. The final table had a motley crew, including a couple of fathers, one or two other women, and notably, what looked like a single teenage girl who looked very bored by the proceedings. You couldn't blame her, as it was the same for you as Henry blew out his candles with a cheer and some spittle. She was likely just the sister or cousin of the Henry, forced to come along to this celebration where none of her peers were in attendance.

They began cutting the cake, kids at your table clamoring for it, bringing you back to your current situation as an elbow jabbed you in the stomach.
