Holly's New Normal

by: Homer J Simpson Author IconMail Icon
Gulping down the last bit of my cereal and still tasting the zesty kick of orange juice, I sprawled out on the living room carpet, utterly captivated by the whirlwind of colors and antics blasting from the TV. Saturday morning cartoons had never been my go-to, but here I was, hooked.

It struck me as kind of hilarious, sitting here glued to these shows. Dylan—scratch that, Daddy—had laid down the law: no mature content for the preschool crowd, which apparently now included me. A part of me wanted to roll my eyes to the ceiling. It felt utterly bizarre, considering I was only five by looks, not by wisdom. But hey, Daddy's word was law, wasn't it? At least, that's how the saying goes.

The rule seemed a bit over the top, given my actual age upstairs, not just what showed on the outside. But with Dylan stepping into his new role as Dad 2.0, I guess the 'father knows best' mantra was in full swing. And who was I to argue? At least, for now.

Just as I was chuckling to myself about the absurdity of my situation, Bobby and Steve wandered into the room, their expressions a mix of curiosity and slight bewilderment. They paused, taking in the sight of me, their mom, now a mini version of myself, completely engrossed in cartoons meant for kids their age—or younger.

"This is so weird," Bobby blurted out, breaking the silence as he flopped down next to me. The corners of his mouth twitched, betraying his attempt to stay serious.

Steve, following suit, sat on my other side, still looking a bit dazed by the whole scenario. "Yeah, I mean, it's hard to get used to this. You're... well, you're still Mom, but also not?"

I turned to them, offering a sympathetic smile. "Tell me about it. It's a lot for me to wrap my head around, too."

There was a pause, a moment of awkward silence as we all tried to adjust to the new dynamics. "So, should we still call you Mom? Or Holly now?" Bobby asked, genuinely confused about how to address me. The question hung in the air, highlighting the strangeness of our new reality.

Steve nodded in agreement, clearly struggling with the same dilemma. "It feels weird calling you Holly, but then calling you Mom feels even weirder now that you're... like this."

I sighed, understanding their confusion. "I guess for now, just call me whatever feels right. We're all figuring this out together," I reassured them, trying to make light of the situation. "But maybe lean towards Holly? It might make things a bit less confusing for everyone else."

They both nodded, though I could tell it would take some time for us all to adjust. "Okay, Holly," Bobby said, testing the name out. It sounded strange coming from him, but it was a start.

Steve gave a small chuckle, "Yeah, okay, Holly. This is going to take some getting used to."

We all shared a laugh, the tension easing a bit as we settled into our new normal. Despite the oddness of our situation, moments like these reminded me that we'd get through it together, one day at a time. And for now, that meant enjoying Saturday morning cartoons, no matter how young - or old - we were.

Moments after we settled into our conversation, the doorbell rang, signaling the arrival of Cynthia, Amy, and their daughter, Emily. As they made their way into the living room, Emily's gaze immediately locked onto me, her brows knitting together in a mix of confusion and curiosity.

"Aunt Holly?" she ventured, her voice trailing off as she struggled to reconcile the image before her with the Aunt Holly she knew. "Why are you littler than me now?"

Cynthia, Amy, and Dylan exchanged quick, understanding glances, each preparing to tackle Emily's question in a child-friendly manner. It was Dylan who knelt down first, matching Emily's eye level with a gentle smile.

"Hey, Emily," Dylan started, his tone soft and inviting. "You know how in some stories, people can change in magical ways? Well, something very unexpected happened with Holly. She took a medicine that was supposed to make her look a bit younger, just on the outside. But it worked way too much, and now, she looks a lot younger than we expected."

Cynthia joined in, "It's kind of like a fairy tale, but in real life. And just like in those stories, the most important part — the person's heart and mind — stays the same. So, inside, Holly is still the Aunt Holly you know and love."

Amy added a comforting smile. "That's right. And even though this is a big surprise for all of us, we're all here to help Holly and make sure she's happy and safe."

Emily processed their explanations, her initial confusion slowly melting away to a look of understanding, perhaps still tinged with a bit of wonder. "So, Aunt Holly is kind of on an adventure, like in my books?" she finally said, a spark of excitement beginning to dance in her eyes.

"Exactly like that," Cynthia affirmed, happy to see Emily adapting to the unusual situation.

Seeing an opportunity for the two to bond under these new circumstances, Amy suggested, "Why don't you two go play in the backyard? It's a lovely day, and I bet you could have a lot of fun together."

Emily's face brightened at the suggestion, her earlier reservations forgotten. She turned to me, enthusiasm bubbling over. "Do you wanna play on the swing set? I can show you how to go really high!"

Before we stood up to head outside, I caught Emily's gaze, feeling a mix of affection and a newfound camaraderie with her. "I'd love that, Emily. But you know, you don't have to call me Aunt Holly anymore. Just Holly is fine."

Her smile widened in response, a silent acknowledgment of our new, unique friendship. "Okay, Holly. Let's go have the best adventure ever!"

As we made our way to the backyard, leaving the adults behind, I felt a warmth spread through me. This change, though daunting, was also opening doors to unexpected and beautiful connections. And as Emily took my hand, leading me with all the confidence of a big sister, I realized that this adventure might just be the beginning of something truly special.
