Out with friends

    by: sharkattack500 Author IconMail Icon
Tina’s pajamas were thoroughly unkempt and had absorbed a not insignificant amount of dog drool. “Might as well change into my real clothes.” She thought to herself, as she stumbled to her feet. Still catching her breath from Maxie's playful onslaught, she made her way back to her room; her thoughts drifted as she picked her outfit of the day.

It wasn’t hard for Tina to make friends. Sure, she was nice and thoughtful, but she had a demeanor that was naturally trustworthy, often looking at the best in others, and at the same time being down to earth. Thus, she had gathered an eclectic array of people she was close to across all walks of life.

Harper and Ava were her classmates. She had known them since elementary school and had been over to their houses so often that their parents had even set aside closet space for her. Ava was the shortest of the three, but made up for it with her boisterous personality, often talking before thinking. If the three found themselves in a pickle, Ava usually had a hand in it. At the same time, she was fiercely loyal and her quick thinking had gotten them out of trouble as much as her big mouth got them into it. Harper was the logical one of the bunch, always quick to point out flaws in Tina or Ava’s plans. With her sandy blonde hair and light blue eyes, she had a tendency to come off as cold or uncaring, but Tina knew that she had a passionate side she didn’t show to just anyone. Tina usually brought balance to the two, having to mediate Ava’s excitement and Harper’s concerns.

Then there was Cassidy, or Cass as she liked to be called. Tina met her when Maxie had fallen into a river during an overzealous rabbit chase. Cass, seeing the distress, didn’t hesitate to jump in and pull Maxie out. As luck would have it, when Tina was helping Cass to her feet, she slipped on the muddy edge and found herself soaked to the bone. The silly dog thought they were still playing and jumped back in, only to be in need of rescue again. Being slightly taller than Tina, with a muscular yet lean build (evidence of her intense martial arts training), she is never one to back down from adventure. Her short black hair cut in a choppy bob frames her angular face and intense brown eyes. There was always something fun and exciting happening when the two hung out together.

Perhaps the most out there of her friends was Amanda. The strange thing was, Tina could never exactly pinpoint where they had met. The pale skinned, black haired, funeral attire wearing girl seemed to show up whenever there were strange occurrences. Her usual garb contrasted her soft spoken and gentle demeanor, which she showed to all manner of things, people or otherwise. It was an odd friendship, but one Tina appreciated nonetheless.

A few minutes later, freshly dressed, Tina headed down to the kitchen. The delicious scent of freshly made waffles lingered. Grabbing a piece of toast from the counter instead, Tina made her way to the front door.

“Leaving so soon, honey? You might want to try these waffles. They are one of my best batches.” Hillary called after her.

“Thanks mom, but I’m off.”

"Don't get into too much mischief today." Hillary replied, walking over.

"I'll do my best, Mom," Tina replied with a laugh. She gave Hillary a quick hug goodbye.

Brie popped up beside them, a smudge of syrup on her cheek, eyes alight with curiosity. "Where are you off to?".

Before Tina could answer, Hillary playfully poked Brie's sides eliciting a cute squeak. "Let your sister enjoy her morning in peace, you little rascal."

Brie rolled her eyes. "I was just wondering if she wanted company, that's all." She turned hopefully to Tina.

"Maybe next time, squirt.”

“Aww, well have fun then!”

As Brie and Hillary made their way back to the kitchen, Tina pulled on her sneakers and grabbed her jacket, zipping it up against the morning chill. Her phone had just buzzed. Surely a message from one of her friends, but which one?
