Staying at home

The family sat around the kitchen table enjoying the stack of fluffy waffles Hillary had made.

"Thank you for saving me from that tickle monster of a squirrel, Brie!" said Hillary with a smile. She had fixed up her blouse and tickle tousled hair. No one would have been able to tell that she had been attacked by not one, but two tickle monsters that morning.

"I still can't believe that happened," said Tina. She bent down to ruffle the ears of the family dog. "At least Maxie got a fun snack, didn’t you!" The family dog let out a happy bark from his spot under the table, hoping for more scraps to come his way.

Brie giggled. "That squirrel sure was funny! I wonder where it ran off to?" As if on cue, she spotted the squirrel peeking in the window, as if on the lookout for more trouble.

After finishing their breakfast, Hillary announced she needed to run to the store. "Tina, can you come along? I need help carrying things."

“Sure mom.”

Brie knew an opportunity when she saw one. "You guys go ahead, I'll be just fine here by myself!"

Hillary was hesitant. "Are you sure, sweetie? I don't want you getting into any mischief."

Brie put on her most innocent smile. "I promise I'll be good. Besides, what could possibly happen?"

"Maybe the squirrel will come back for revenge!" Tina said, digging her fingers into Brie's ribs. The young girl squealed and quickly tried to return fire, but Tina had retreated safely out of her reach.

Hillary chuckled. "Well alright, but if I find any more wild animals in the house, you are going out with them!" They all shared a laugh at that.

With smiles and waves, Hillary and Tina headed out the door, leaving Brie home alone with Maxie. A grin spread across her face as ideas started forming in her head. "Looks like it's just you and me, boy. Want to play?" Maxie barked excitedly. This was sure to be an interesting afternoon!
