It was the aromatic smell of the coffee that snapped Walter out of his work. The device didn't draw much power, but he still ran a low voltage cable to ensure it received a steady power supply, and monitor the draw.
Tim sat on a plain wooden stool, just enjoying his father's pleasure in his work. Walter turned the device over in his hands, a quick visual inspection. As the diagnostics scrolled by on the attached laptop screen.
At the end, a large vivid green tick filled the computer screen. "All diagnostics passed." in grey text at the bottom.
Walter took a deep breath, and slowly released it. Turning the device he checked the screen.
"Well, here we go." he chuckled, a nervous edge in his voice, as his finger hovered over the 'Initiate Change' icon.
Tim was leaning forward, as the stool started to topple. His attention distracted as he fought to avoid crashing down. He only caught the blinding white flash, that dazzled the entire basement. Followed moments later by being plunged into the dark.
"It's okay... It's okay." his father's familiar reassuring tone soothing Tim, as the sound of the back-up generator kicking in, started to restore power to the basement lab, and wider house.
In the pitch black, it was impossible to see anything. A throaty chuckle came from Walter. "Well, it's at least a partial success." he observed. "I've never felt so young, flexible and free from aches."
"It worked?"
As the lights flickered uncertainly back into life. Tim caught brief glimpses of Walter... Well, it had to be Walter, but she looked utterly transformed.
A wry smile on her face, as she took in her new body in these dazzling flashes.
"Well... I suppose I was carrying a little weight, as I guy... and it had to go somewhere..." Walter laughed.
Walter let the longer hair fall through her fingers... Fingers that were blessed with crimson nails.
"Pink... I didn't foresee this..." she muttered to herself.
