The early lab experiments with dogs, and chimps had shown some degree of shared thoughts, and understanding of a different perspective, in solving mazes, and in sharing food.

Walter worried about being a foot-note in the scientific literature. The also-ran who lacked the courage of his convictions.
Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves. Walter thought about Tim, providing him with stability, with financial security and a legacy.

Flicking the safeties aside, Walter felt the connection form between him and the device. His consciousness expanding. The empathy, the curiosity of everyone on the university grounds was an open book to him. It was heart-warming...
However, he needed to hone in on one mind, to give them a message. Get the categoric proof that he'd spoken through the ether, and with the weight of the breakthrough behind him. Well, then any scientific irregularities could be overlooked, and polished away.
