Squirt awoke to the sensation of tapping on his shell. He sighed mentally. Ted must be awake and is trying to get his attention, jumping on his back in an attempt to do so. But instead of responding Squirt stayed in his shell, as he did most mornings, in a vain attempt to stave off another day of 'adventure'.
Squirt had always lamented his fate to end up as a battling Pokemon, but he never imagined it would end up like this. Instead of being able to relax in his Pokeball between fights he now had to worry about protecting his diminutive trainer Ted. Now, that's not to say that Squirt didn't like Ted; in fact before the shrinking he was a pretty good trainer who worked hard to try to boost Squirt's lacking confidence problem. But ever since then Ted has been... a bit much. Almost seemingly trying to compensate the situation with boundless confidence and a an almost obsessive drive to beat the Pokemon League... assuming it still exists.
Squirt stared out of the opening of his shell as he contemplated on these things when the tiny head of his trainer popped down from the top of the aperture.
"Come on sleepy head! We're never gonna make it to Pewter City if you lay here all day!" He called out in his normal, chipper voice.
Squirts sighed as he exited his shell, with Ted jumping down on top of his head as he did so.
"Are you sure?" the Squirtle looked up towards the top of his head where his trainer was perched as he addressed him. "We've been wandering around for months now and..."
"Squirts how many times do I have to tell you?" Ted interrupted "All of these challenges are just a part of the journey!" he said with way too much energy for this early in the morning. "It doesn't matter if we don't have a map, or if I'm really small or whatever, we just have to press forward!" Ted stood on the top of his Squirtle's head and pointed triumphantly towards the distance.
If that little speech was supposed to awaken the adventurous spirit deep within Squirts, it didn't work. Instead he turned and looked back the way they came the day before, causing Ted to stumble a bit from the movement. "I'm just saying, that one town we passed through, the one ran by that big Snorelax, seemed pretty nice..." Squirts looked down at the ground "Not to mention safe..."
Ted knelled down and gave his partner a reassuring pat on the head. "That was a fun distraction bud, but that was in the past! We have to keep moving forward and discover new adventures. Now come on, lets get going!"
