With a rapid gulp of air, gathering every ounce of courage you possess, you decide to leap from the shoe. The drop feels like free-falling off a cliff due to your size. Time seems to slow down, allowing you to contemplate the very real possibility of an unceremonious end should the thick mom choose to shift her weight in your direction.
As you near the floor, you try to cushion your fall with a clumsy roll, which results in you momentarily seeing stars. But there's no time to recover. The floor beneath you vibrates with every move the mother makes, and each vibration sends another wave of terror coursing through your miniature veins.
You sprint, every footfall sounding deafening to your ears. To the mother, though, you're no more than a silent, unseen spec, your frantic efforts drowned by the bustling sounds of Footlocker. Her thick, pillowy foot comes crashing down just inches from you, causing a gust of wind that almost bowls you over. The plush carpet fibers look like a dense forest from your vantage, providing little protection against the looming behemoths surrounding you.
As you make your dash to the safety of the shelves, the shrill laughter of teenagers and the melodic chime of a ringing phone compete with the thunderous footsteps of customers. You dart past a discarded piece of gum, a monstrous obstacle in its own right, and duck under a shelf just as another mammoth foot descends nearby.
Panting heavily, you find yourself hidden amongst rows and rows of sneakers, a dim labyrinth that offers a temporary reprieve from the titanic shoppers outside. The dim lighting, combined with the shadows cast by the towering boxes, lends a sepulchral atmosphere to your surroundings. However, the immediate danger has subsided.
