Dominic paced nervously back and forth as he waited for the elevator to take him to HR. He had an urgent appointment with Jack Caruthers. The dread was an icy knot in the pit of his stomach. He'd been so proud to earn his place at Work in Change Inc. Dominic was sure it was a great company with an incredible future. He'd happily signed the disclaimer surrendering his bodily autonomy. The hope being to earn a masculinity boost with his next promotion. A change that wasn't merely selfish. He was sure his wife would appreciate it too.
Now, as his stomach churned, and the sensation of nausea intensified, he knew he was facing a punishment transformation. His mind racing through all the different options. He didn't want to be reduced to an animal. Even if he kept his ability to speak. That was unlikely, he hoped. But serving in some restoration program to bring back extinct creatures, or those on the verge. It wasn't the excitement he wanted to experience.
His teeth ground, and a whimper died in his throat, as he considered the mythical transformations the company was experimenting with, and the variety of creatures expanding almost daily. The idea of being a centaur, or a wood nymph was one that intrigued but ultimately he didn't want to personally experience.
Exiting the elevator, it felt like his heart was in his mouth. Each step taking him closer to punishment. "Dear God, three million." he muttered to himself. Cursing out his lack of attention.
Dominic could only hope they weren't suffering... 'Especially if you're joining their ranks.' his treacherous brain mused.
His head was spinning, and his feet unsteady as he reached his destination. The name plate on the door, identifying it as Jack Caruthers: Head of Human Resources. The secretary sitting at the desk, coughed to attract Dominic's attention.
Dominic coughed, spluttered, no words coming. But, with an uncomfortable smile. He was able to nod. She activated the intercom. "It's Mr. Holt, here to see you sir. Yes, the accountant who lost three million." she added.
It felt like a dagger through his heart. The reminder he absolutely didn't need.
"Just go on in." She waved Dominic towards the door.
"Come!" an strong commanding voice booming from the far side.
