Undead

"A vampire?" Dr. Kinski asked.

I nodded, pacing around the morgue. "It's the only answer that fits."

She shook her head. "It just seems so hard to believe."

"Okay, you think maybe I'm some other kind of walking, talking corpse with fangs. But I've found the source of that yummy smell I mentioned." I pointed to a mini-fridge at the other end of the room. "You haven't opened that door since I woke up; nevertheless, I'm betting that, if I opened it now, I'd find blood. Human blood."

She sighed, then walked to the fridge. "I guess there's only one thing to try." She opened it up, took out a bag of blood, then walked back and handed it to me.

I took a sip. It was coppery and sweet. It was the first thing in my mouth since I turned 12 that wasn't plant-based.

And it was the best thing I'd ever tasted.

I held up the bag and squeezed, squirting the blood into my mouth.

While I was doing that, my family came into the morgue; and they saw me.

Dad looked like he was about to be sick. Mom passed out.

And Courtney, who read every single YA vampire novel she could get her hands on, said only one word: "Awesome!"

******************************

Once Mom came to, Dr. Kinski and I helped them all to take a seat.

"Last night," I explained, "I went to an underground rave. The guy who ran it drugged me; then, he and three of his buddies carried me off. As they took off my clothes, I thought I knew what was coming. Instead, they bit me. Turns out they were vampires; and now, so am I."

"What does this mean?" Dad asked.

"All I know right now is that I need blood; nothing else will do."

"I'll give you a cooler and some bags," Dr. Kinski said, "to satisfy your needs. If you need more, just drop by; I'll see that you're covered."

With the cooler and blood bags, we started on our way. Once we got to the lobby, though, I spotted a problem: It was late afternoon, and the sun was shining. All I could think of was all those movies where vampires burst into flames at just a touch of sunlight.

I extended one finger into a sunbeam, then withdrew it with a hiss. "We've got a problem; sunlight may not be immediately fatal, but it hurts worse than my period."

******************************

Dr. Kinski hooked me up with an oversized hoodie and a pair of sunglasses, and I was able to go out. Back at home, I went straight for the basement, where I could stay out of the sun. The basement rec room had a mini-fridge, so I could put my blood away. I realized that, from now on, what had been a guest bedroom down here would have to become my new room.

Once the sun was safely down, we started moving my things. Well, we all started, but I was now so strong and fast, I did most of it.

The first thing I did when I had everything down was hang my heaviest blankets over the windows. That way, at least the basement would be safe for me.
