"What? Demolished?!" you yelled.
"Yep. In a month," Townsend said. "Look."
He went into his bag and took out a piece of paper, folded multiple times. "Says right here. It was announced ages ago. Luckily I found this thing floating around on 5."
You put two and two together. "That's why those three families left last week."
"Yeah. I thought that was weird."
The gravity of the situation sunk in as you realised the place you'd lived your whole life, your world, the place you were even named after, would be gone - and if you didn't move out soon, you'd be gone with it. Sighing deeply, you ran your hand through your hair and tried to think through the problem.
"What are our options?" you asked.
"Well, we need to find somewhere else to live. I was gonna suggest the tower closest to us but that's being knocked down too, so we're in for a journey."
"Shit," you said. The thought of it horrified you.
You talked a little while longer until you finally settled on your options.
"Way I see it, we've got two choices," you said. "All these humans have to be leaving soon too, and they've got a lot of rubbish to pack up. So we could just stow away in their stuff."
"There's no way we don't get seen," you said.
"I dunno, have you seen how much stuff those idiots have? There'll definitely be a box or two we could hide away in and then climb out of later."
You thought about it. "There's the single man on 4. The fewer eyes the better."
"But the family on 6 would have more boxes. Be easier to find a place to hide."
"Either way..."
"It's a big risk," Townsend nodded. "I know."
"So... what else?" you said with a gulp, knowing full well what the answer was.
"Or we go ourselves. We find another apartment block nearby and set up shop there."
"Or get eaten by a dog after four paces."
You sighed deeply. Neither was appealing. One guaranteed you'd never have to face the outside, but came fraught with the danger of discovery, while the other carried with it all the risks of the unknown - outside. You weren't outside people. You'd never left the building. It was a nightmarish prospect. Even the sky terrified you.
